Color inkjet printer with built-in flatbed (A4) scanner and Ethernet and USB connectors. The printer part is quite solid with the OS X built-in drivers. If you can live with less-than-stellar scanning quality and avoid using the HP All-in-One drivers, and get a good price, you may consider buying it.
The good:
+ Networking (=multiuser) capabilities.
+ Built-in web interface with e.g. basic scanning functionality.
+ Solid printer engine.
+ Two good print drivers in OS X: the Gutenprint "HP DeskJet 990C series" and a HP-supplied print-only driver.
The bad:
- Mediocre quality scans.
The ugly:
x The HP All-in-One scan & print driver sucks so much it's not even funny. It stops working every 2-3 weeks and requires a full uninstall and reinstall. It eats your MacBook batteries for breakfast. It pops up advertisements regularly (buy more ink!).
Does scanning work from over the network from multiple Macs?
Yes. Ours is connected to the Ethernet-port on an Airport Extreme. Printing and scanning works wireless (on our iMac and iBook) without any fuss. The only problem is the driver which, as said, is quite buggy. In my opinion the printing works quite okay. I haven't either had any bigger issues with scanning as long as I use HP Scan Pro -software. I would rather use the Twain plug-in but its utterly crap, it freezes at least on every second scan.
I quite like the Photosmart 2575. Yes, there are a lot better printers and scanners out there, but the Ethernet is a big plus. The big drawback is that HP doesn't seem to give a damn about software and drivers for Mac. I even feel that the driver works even worse with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard than it did with 10.4 Tiger.
